With 1.9 million inhabitants, Hamburg is Germany's second largest city after Berlin. It is Germany's most important port; the Elbe River connects Hamburg to the North Sea. Hamburg also plays an important role at the European level as a port city.
Despite Hamburg's rich history, there are not many historic buildings left in Hamburg. Most were destroyed by bombing during World War II.
